Walking on the Haugabreen glacier was a highlight of our trip, and we’re glad we found Breogfjell guides. The meeting spot was right on our planned vacation route, and the trek was epic. Our guide Gustav is the man! He was very knowledgeable and got us in the groove very quickly so we could enjoy the experience.

My fiance and I booked a tour with Breogfjell Mountain Guides to go hike the Haugabreen Glacier. They met us at our hotel (the only one really in town, the Thon Jolster) to pick us up. Apparently, there was a problem with the normal group van so we ended up driving ourselves to the hike start (only 20 min). It was a somewhat narrow/windy road, like most of the roads in Norway! We were a group of 4 total plus the guide. Our guide told us he doesn't see a lot of Americans on the hike so we were happy to have found something off-the-beaten-path!! Our guide paid the car fee at a little unmanned toll booth before the parking lot and we put a pass on our car window. There are spots for 10-15 cars. Before the hike start, there is a hole-toilet and a picnic table. The hike to the glacier is approx 2.5k, starting with about 30 min of relatively flat trails that cross some streams, then a rock scramble that was quite steep. We had to cross a waterfall in some places - I was glad to have a guide as the signs were not very clear and it would have been hard to find the best parts of the trail to cross the water. We arrived at the glacier, had a quick lunch, and then geared up (put on our crampons and got harnessed up.) It was a bit scary (for me...not my fiance) to walk up a glacier but I learned to trust my crampons. Our guide tailored the trip to the skill level of the group and offered us several opportunities to go through tunnels, one blue ice cave, and some other fun routes." The glacier changes daily so you never know what elements you are going to see. This is not one of those places where everyone has the same Instagram photo!! We spent about 2h playing on the glacier. You definitely need layers and gloves and waterproof shoes (boots). We got lucky with the weather but still ranged from needing a light jacket to a full winter jacket/windbreaker. I was grateful for my headwrap to warm my ears. I skip the "boots" mandate on most hikes but on this one

We booked the Haugabreen glacier hike and highly recommend this company and the tour itself. Our guide Osa was great! There is a huge glacier in Jostedalsbreen National Park (Breen means glacier in English) and it has many ‘fingers’ that come down into the various valleys. This hike is at one of the fingers of the main glacier. It’s not touristy and is an awesome adventure.Be prepared, this is a tough hike and it’s best if you are in shape. You have to carry crampons, ice axe, and harness to the start of the glacier. The hike to the glacier is about 2.5-3km one way. It starts off flat but at the end there is a reasonably steep climb to get to the glacier. You can refill water at one of the many streams on the hike. There are cool plants like cotton and even one of the two carnivorous plants, see the yellow star shaped plant photo. The glacier itself requires waterproof high top shoes, it’s surprisingly wet and good shoes will prevent a soaking shoe if your foot lands in the wrong spot (happened to my wife). Crampons are adjustable to most shoe sizes. I was a size 12 and didn’t have any problems. We had our 12 yr old son with us and it’s a great experience for kids. He loves climbing the glacier and the chance to use an ice axe!Communication from the company prior to the hike could improve. Meet at the Thon Hotel in Skei a little before 9am to meet your guide.
