Fyrig Sauna Skei

As a Finn, visiting a sauna abroad inherently comes with some foreboding. Fyrig offers a sauna that has a beautiful view of a crystal clear lake and snow capped mountains.You can join in for 200 NOK, but later in the evening you can (only) book it all for yourself. At a rather steep cost. But I am traveling with my kids and having sauna far away from home is always worth the cost, right? Right?The sauna would have fitted 12 people, it was clean enough (with a funny smell, I couldn’t quite place) but only 49 C! In the next half an hour we managed to push it to 66, but it was still more steamy than hot. Oh and there are no showers. So the dip in the cold water advertised in Instagram post is rather mandatory if you want to wash the sweat from your skin.And the deck and pier is a hang-out for the local teens. So much for the privacy sitting behind a store display size window in your swimming trunks. Same when walking towards the stairs leading to the lake. Might have to walk over stretched legs of teenage lovers hanging out behind the building. Which is what you will do to get water to throw to the 1000 kg stove. There is a water post in one of the corners of the building, but alas, it is dry!The contract dictates that you can’t eat or drink in the sauna area. One would prefer to have some chairs to relax between runs, but the rented area does not include that. Only the dressing space and sauna. Outside the building is huge, but it seems to be a garage for card and boats mainly.So all in all, we did get the sauna for ourselves, the view was every bit as wonderful as advertised, sauna eventually got hot enough, we managed to swim in the lake. But has no showers. Not worth the cost for me.

A cool initiative in a small town, but with some room for improvement.Some small improvements could lift this to a great offering: Number one being a shower. Unhygenic and just an essential part of any sauna, this is really missing. Could easily be outdoor but is a must. Owners need to ensure there are enough provisions: desinfectant spray and paper towels a minimum (empty when we visited). More hooks and a cupboard to store your belongings would be a good investment too.Can confirm comments from others about the sauna not being warm enough, so don't expect a 90deg setup!Still: The music installation worked well. The stairs into the water make for a safe swim and the fjordwater is perfectly cold and clean. Few places where you can experience such epic views and instagram worthy swim pictures!
